A PROJECT to raise money to replace Ramsbottom’s war memorial received a boost when it was presented with a £200 cheque.

Members of Ramsbottom War Memorial Project received the money from ASDA’s Green Token Giving scheme at the supermarket’s Rawtenstall store.

The scheme is run by the supermarket across the country and gives people the chance to nominate local community causes and groups using the green tokens from shopping.

Ramsbottom War Memorial Project achieved the ASDA donation of £200 after finishing runners up in the voting in the April to June period.

Members of the group also raised £900 towards their £50,000 target earlier this year when they held bucket collections in the Rawtenstall store.

The project aims to replace the existing war memorial in the grounds of St. Paul’s Church on Bridge Street with a larger one engraved with the names of more than 500 fallen personnel from both world wars who lived in Ramsbottom and surrounding villages. The existing memorial will be re-sited in the gardens at the entrance to Ramsbottom Cemetery.

So far the project has managed to raise more than £35,000. Visit www.ramsbottomwarmemorialproject.co.uk.
