A POPULAR Bury GP has hung up his stethoscope after 41 years treating patients across the borough.

Dr Chan Cheong was born in Mauritius but moved to the United Kingdom to study medicine at the University of Manchester in the 1970s.

He qualified in 1976 and began working as a GP at Bury General Hospital before moving to Vernon Road Practice, in Greenmount, in 1979.

He later moved to Garden City Medical Practice in Holcombe Brook in 1990, where he remained up until his retirement two weeks ago.

Dr Cheong, aged 65, who lives in Hollymount, said goodbye to staff and patients at a drop-in session at the surgery on Friday, December 1.

He said: “I did not want to have a party because I thought it would be too emotional.

"The messages I received were very overwhelming and touching. They have made my career worthwhile.

“It was a difficult decision to retire. I had a lot of sleepless nights and some patients said I’m not ready to go, but they understand why.

“I have enjoyed working at the practice and have seen so many families grow up. I want to thank all of my patients from down the years.”

Hundreds of patients attended the drop-in throughout the day, and showed their appreciation by bringing presents, including a number of garden centre and Waterstones vouchers.

Messages of appreciation also flowed in on the ‘What’s on in Ramsbottom’ Facebook group after one user shared a photograph of a cake he had made for Dr Cheong.

After such a long career, Dr Cheong says that he still plans on staying active, and is looking forward to having more time to play golf and undertake some DIY jobs.

He also attends the gym five times a week, and says that it is essential for people in the medical profession to practise what they preach.

He said: “It’s done me good, so I try to pass on the benefits to my patients. They are more likely to listen to your advice if you look well yourself.

“Having trust with patients is very important.”
