WORK to repair a pothole-ridden road is due to begin on Monday.

Nuttall Lane, which serves about 1,000 homes on the Whittingham Drive and St Andrews estates, is frequently cited as one of the worst roads in the borough for potholes.

An online petition was set up on the council’s website last month, calling on them to ‘address and rectify the unsafe road surface on Nuttall Lane, Ramsbottom, due to residents’ safety concerns for all pedestrians and road users’. The petition has amassed 37 signatures.

Councillors claim residents have even resorted to reaching into their own pockets in order to have some of the worst potholes on the road fixed.

Ramsbottom councillor Robert Hodkinson said: “Large crater-like potholes have been reported to the council numerous times over the last few weeks.

"One of the largest areas of concern raised to me by residents is damage to vehicles caused by these potholes. In my view, that is simply unacceptable.

"I inspected the road on 10 March and the road was a complete mess. It appears that now, a local resident, or residents, have actually gone ahead and filled in some of the worst potholes themselves over the last weekend as they are simply fed up of the council’s delays.

“The council had promised to undertake repairs around the week of the March 19 but this never materialised.

"We cannot have a situation where residents are so angry about the state of the roads that they are having to resort to filling them in themselves.”
