GAS engineers have been working to a fix a leak on a gas pipe in Ramsbottom.
Cadent posted on Facebook on Tuesday to say they were fixing the leak in the pipe which runs directly under Bolton Road West.
The work began on Monday.
Traffic lights are in place to manage the flow of vehicles in the area, causing some disruption.
In a statement said: "First and most important thing first – everything is under control. Our engineers are monitoring gas levels constantly, to ensure they don’t compromise safety.
"But this needs fixing asap, before it gets any worse and to ensure a safe, reliable supply to thousands of homes in the local area.
"We started digging in the road yesterday (Monday) to locate, assess and then fix the leak.
"Working with the highways team at Bury Council, we’ve got traffic lights in place to manage the flow of vehicles around the work area. We know this is causing disruption, but hope you understand we’ve got your safety as our main priority.
"We’ve also created a temporary pedestrian crossing near to Woodhey High School, as the existing crossing sits within our work area.
"Once we’ve located the source of the leak, we’ll have a better idea on how long it will take to fix."
