Schoolboy football cup win lingers in memory

IT MAY be 50 years since the goals hit the back of the net, but Geoff Hayes can remember it as if it was yesterday.

In April, 1959, the football team at St Andrew’s CE Primary School were crowned as winners of the Scholes Cup.

They had seen off stiff competition from other Radcliffe schools and beat Ainsworth 3-0 in the final.

It was the first time in 20 years that the school team had won the trophy.

Mr Hayes, now aged 61 and living in Ainsworth Road, Radcliffe, said: “The Scholes Cup was the biggest football competition for primary schools in Radcliffe. It was a big thing to win and I remember it vividly. We had to work hard for the trophy and we were very happy when we won.”

Playing in the final match with an 11-year-old Mr Hayes was Ian Wood, who went on to play for Oldham Athletic before setting up Anglo Heating in Thomas Street, Radcliffe.

Also in the team was captain Tommy Waters, Brian Street, Stefan Sowinski, Colin Birmingham, Anthony Schofield, Colin Molyneux, Nigel Reed, Michael Parsons and Victor Hadcroft.
