CHIEF Scout Lord Rowallan had an unusual memento from his visit to Radcliffe.
For he was presented with a bowler hat when he visited the Ringley campsite of the Radcliffe and District Boy Scouts’ Association.
The association was chosen as the host for the visit and entertained Scouts and Cubs from Bolton, Farnworth, Prestwich, Ashton, Denton, Oldham and Whitefield.
More than 2,000 Scouts camped on the site during the weekend and they were joined by 3,000 Cubs who travelled from across the area in coaches and cars.
The first item on Lord Rowallan’s itinerary was lunch with one of the patrols.
Competition for this was tough and a contest based on the principles of Scouting was held for the various patrols in Radcliffe.
It was won by the 6th Radcliffe (Congregational) troop, who then nominated a patrol of six Scouts to cook and prepare the lunch.
Food on the menu included Lancashire hot pot and red cabbage.
Lord Rowallan, who was due to become Governor General of Tasmania, then toured Giant’s Seat campsite, inspecting the tents and equipment. He then gave a short farewell address, during which he thanked the Scouts for their hospitality and wished them well in the future.
