Do you think it is right that the landlord of the Duke William pub in Ainsworth has been ordered to pull down a smoking shelter which had been built without planning permission?

BOGUS workman leaves answerphone clue

POLICE have renewed thier appeal for help is identifying a bogus workman. They have released audio clips of an answer-machine message left by a man in the hope that somebody will recognise his voice and help to identify him.

At about 11.45am on Friday February 2, a man called at a house in Rochdale Road, Bury, and informed the 88-year-old woman who answered the door that she had problems with her roof.

She let him in and the man went upstairs into the loft carrying a set of wooden stepladders.

advertisement He damaged the bedroom ceiling by making a hole in it and then told his victim he would repair it at a cost of £80.

The 88-year-old, who had dementia, told him that she did not have any money and that he would have to speak to her daughter. She gave him her daughter's number and when there was no reply he left a message on her answer machine.

He then went to the woman's next-door neighbour, who was also elderly and did the same thing, before leaving by the back door.

DC Tony Hough from Bury Police Station said: "This man preyed on vulnerable, elderly people who were confused and unable to stand up to him. It's a cowardly and despicable crime and he needs to be caught.

"Sadly, the victim of this first crime has now passed away, but it is important to her family that this man is brought to justice.

"I hope that somebody hears this message and recognise the offender's voice. If anybody does, I would urge them to contact us and give us any information they can to help with our investigation.

"It's a sad fact that some people will take advantage of older people, so I would also like to remind people that if you do not know somebody who comes to your door, and they do not show you official identification, please do not let them into your home."

Anybody who recognises the man's voice is asked to contact Bury Police on 0161 856 8179 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
