Do you think it is right that the landlord of the Duke William pub in Ainsworth has been ordered to pull down a smoking shelter which had been built without planning permission?

Ramsbottom Rake cycling

HUNDREDS of spectators lined the streets of Ramsbottom to cheer on a competitive field in this year's Ramsbottom Rake cycling event.

In clear weather conditions, about 100 cyclists in six categories took on the immensely gruelling hill climb, which punishes the legs and lungs over a full mile.

Before the time trial event began, there was disappointment around the course as fans learnt that Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins could not take part due to a family crisis.

But despite the setback, the event was at its nail-biting best with a thrilling ride from Preston-based doctor Jim Henderson, who earned his seventh victory in eight years.

Organiser Warren Chamberlain said: "It was unfortunate that Bradley couldn't take part as a lot of people had come out to see him, but I think the amateurs did us proud today and it made for a thrilling afternoon of entertainment.

"We would like to thank everyone who helped make the event possible and hope that it will be just as good when we're back here next year."
