THE eyes of the country will be on Bury today as residents vote in the local elections.

A phalanx of media has descended on the town to cover what they see as one of the most vital polls in the region.

It could be because the result hangs on a knife-edge, with the Tories looking to take outright control of Bury Council for the first time in 22 years. They need to win just three seats, and have been bringing the big guns to town to whip up support: both David Cameron and William Hague have made two visits recently.

Reporting teams from The Times, NW Tonight, Granada, Sky News, MEN, BBC Radio Manchester, Newsnight and others will all be at the count tonight - not forgetting, of course, the Bury Times!

A team from Radio 5 Live was also in Bury yesterday getting local opinions on Bury Market - listeners can tune in to their Election Special once the polls close at 10pm.

l Election staff in Bury are confident that the chances of voter fraud are lower here than elsewhere.

A new report from the Joseph Rowntree Trust criticises the current voting arrangements, especially postal votes. It suggests that residents should show photo ID when voting, and that there should be individual registration papers for postal voting, not one for the whole household.

The law requires staff to check the signatures and dates of birth on 20 per cent of all postal vote declarations - but in Bury, they check 100 per cent of them, and by hand.

I would not be able to understand why the residents of Bury would put up with a Labour Council for another term, I believe that the council will swing, one of the main reasons will be the cuts to health services imposed by Labour! USE YOUR VOTE!

Council elections? There's a laugh! Living in Radcliffe now is like having your home in the middle of a dirty, noisy, money grubbing, unsightly industrial estate. And "planning"? The mish mash of ugly, crowded new and old buildings, filthy narrow streets and pavements, heavily crowded roads, pollution, both smells and noise from factories allowed to extend alongside our homes makes living here an endurance test, not at all a happy existence.
I'm ashamed of living in Radcliffe now. We have been let down.

All i can say is that moving a rubbish dump, a sewer plant and a nuclear waste dump to Radcliffe will raise house prices!!

What a complete HOLE Radcliffe is, has always been and will always be.

Build a big wall around it so i cant see it anymore.

What a cheek from this Bury guy. Most of the money taken from the residents of Radcliffe, Whitefield and Prestwich, has gone into making Bury a more up-to-date shopping centre, and the likes. These three towns were much better off, when being looked after by their own councils, who looked after their own towns, and not getting ripped off for Bury!!!

Radcliffe is crucially important for Bury. Who now controls the town hall thanks to the people of Radcliffe? It was Radcliffe that decided to give the Tories power and rightly so.

It is true that the historical industrial strength of Radcliffe was the reason why is collapsed so badly in the 1950's and 60's, and why puny Bury succeeded as it had no money, influence or attention whatsoever to begin with, but his attitude is very misplaced.
