A THAI spa was blessed by monks for good luck — and was then flooded.

Each year, the owners of Leelawadee Authentic Thai Massage and Spa in Elms Square, Whitefield, invite Buddhist monks to lead a 'merit' ceremony to bring good fortune and prosperity.

The first two ceremonies, in 2013 and 2014, lived up to their promise and led to business booming at the spa.

However, things took a turn for the worse in April when offices above the shop suffered plumbing problems, causing gallons of water to leak downstairs.

The spa's joint manager Mark Manning was called out in the early hours of a morning to discover the flood had wrecked the flooring and fittings and the firm had to close for 10 weeks.

Now, after undergoing a major refurbishment, including the fitting of a brand new reception area, the business is back on track.

The monks, who live at the Sri Ratanaram Buddhist Thai Temple in Manchester, were welcomed back for another blessing ceremony at the spa on Friday and Mr Manning said he hopes they will bring good luck in the next year.

He added: "It was a shame it happened, but we're back open now and the new fittings look really good.

"We built up the business when we opened in 2013 and things got really busy after that.

"A lot of our custom comes from word-of-mouth recommendations and we're looking forward to attracting customers from further afield too."
