THE finishing touches are being put on a new community hub in Whitefield.

Alt. is due to open its doors on Saturday and owner Paul Kersh has given The Guide a sneak preview of his venue, which he hopes will unite people in the local area under one roof.

Mr Kersh has completely gutted the building in Moss Lane, which used to house the children's shop The Spruce Goose, to make way for a welcoming, rustic looking venue which will feature local artwork on the walls.

He hopes to attract a number of local music groups and societies to the unique art space, which will be a place for people to eat, drink and relax.

Mr Kersh, aged 49, said: "We are just finishing the last bits ready for the grand opening. We're really excited that it's finally here.

"People seem really encouraged by the idea of having lots of different groups and activities under one roof. I'm hoping that we can have anything from guitar lessons to mindfulness session. We could have a coffee morning at 10am followed by a mother and baby group, and also allow local community groups access to a space where they can meet, together, in a safe environment."

Mr Kersh has been working on the project since July and has been heavily involved with the renovation of the building, which has been stripped inside to make way for new fixtures and fittings.

He said: "I moved back to Whitefield 18 months ago and I had this idea to find a building in the community that could be a hub for people in the local area. I found this building and instantly knew it would be perfect.

"I've been doing this project since July I've striped the inside and rebuild it and all the wood. The timbers have been treated and gone back inside to make shelfing and decoration.

"We are reaching out to the community – it will be a place where everyone is welcome to come in and relax over a cuppa, bring their children and have a chill out."
