WATCH a big political scandal unravel in Whitefield Garrick's latest production.

The theatre group is staging Hugh Whitmore's A Letter of Resignation, which follows the administration of former Conservative Prime Minister Harold Macmillan and the scandals behind the headlines.

Directed by Ian Raynor, the drama play is set around the time of the Profumo affair between John Profumo, Macmillan's secretary of state for war, and model Christine Keeler.

Profumo's letter of resignation would then bring to a climax the scandal led to the collapse of the Macmillan government in October 1963.

Committee member Peter Hill said: "The story follows Macmillan as a man rather than a politician, his relationship with his wife at the time and how it affected his thinking of the general political sphere.

"This is the first time we have performed this as it is a relatively new play. The performances we have done so far have gone extremely well so we are very happy. It is quite a wordy play – there are a lot of anecdotes about his long political career, but it isn't too full on – some of the stories are quite light and very enjoyable."

Robert Howell plays leading man Macmillan, while Clodagh O'Flynn takes the role of his adulterous wife Lady Dorothy Macmillan.

John Still plays MI5 officer Ian Ritchie, Mike Jeffries plays Oliver Widdowes and Christine Flannigan plays housekeeper Mrs Brennan.

Mr Hill said: "Visitors can enjoy the newly refurbished theatre. We spent £125,000 last summer to make the audience more comfortable with a new foyer, bar and social area.

"Those who attend can also see an exhibition from Prestwich Art Group. The members' work is currently on display at the theatre."

A Letter of Resignation runs at Whitefield Garrick until Saturday from 7.30pm. For tickets visit ticketsource.co.uk/whitefieldgarrick.
