A TEENAGER has become a social media celebrity after getting on his bike and finding himself holiday work.

Matthew Mantel, aged 16, has been receiving rave reviews for his car wash service on Facebook and offers of work.

Customers in Unsworth have been swapping stories about the 'extremely polite, personable' new car washer in town.

Matthew, who is staying with family friends Jessica and Michelle Mortimer-Collier in Glendale Avenue during the summer break, turned 16 just after the holidays began.

Matthew, from Markland Hill, Bolton, said: "They wanted me to do something productive, rather than staying at home.

"Jessica suggested car washing.

"Before I was staying in bed late and playing on my PlayStation."

Despite being rained off at first, Matthew headed out the next day with his bucket, cloth and car shampoo. His startup costs were just £20.

Matthew said: "I started right at the bottom of the street and it was a bit scary at first, knocking on doors.

"The third person I tried really liked the idea. He let me do his van and his car and I got my first £10.

"I knocked on more doors and within the first day I got about £30.

"That first day I thought, 'yeah this is good'."

When Matthew got home, Jessica and Michelle had a surprise for him.

Someone had shared a review on the Spotted Unsworth Facebook page, praising his work.

Matthew said: "I didn't realise how many people had seen it, the response from the community was amazing and it really motivated me to do more.

"People were trying to get in contact for me to come and wash their cars and book appointments."

Getting this online response surprised Matthew and then the Northern Crafthouse in Whitefield offered him a trial shift.

Just two days after his first car washing stint, Matthew was also offered two shifts a week at the restaurant.

He said: "I didn't expect these opportunities to come from this and I'm really grateful for all the support.

"I'm a bit in awe and shock at how supportive people have been and how they enjoy seeing the local community do well.

"I really want to do the best I can."

Matthew has just finished at Rivington and Blackrod High School and when summer is over he will start at Runshaw College in Leyland.

He will study drama, politics and something he's already excelling in — business.
