A PRIMARY school has received a glowing Ofsted report classifying it as 'good' overall and 'outstanding' in three areas.

Unsworth Primary School has been rated 'good' by Ofsted and its leadership, early years provision and pupils' development were all found to be 'outstanding'.

The report published on Monday, highlight's the school's Special Educational Needs (SEN) provision and said pupils in the reception class were able to progress rapidly even though they may enter the school with skills and understanding below those typical for their age.

The report, by lead inspector Gill Pritchard, said: "By the end of Reception, the proportion of children who reach a good level of development has in recent years been above the national average."

SEN arrangement at the school was called 'highly effective' and one parent was quoted as saying: "They always help where they can. The SEN team is excellent."

According to the inspector: "Teaching for pupils who have SEN and/or disabilities is strong. There is a larger-than-average number of pupils who have an education, health and care plan throughout school and leaders and teachers plan effective programmes of work to support their needs."

The Blackley Close school was also praised for its pupils' behaviour which was described as 'excellent'.

There were two areas where Ms Pritchard felt the school could improve.

She felt the school could better match the challenges to the children's abilities in order for them to make better progress and the outdoor Reception area could be improved to offer more reading, writing and maths prompts.

Headteacher, Christine Reynolds wrote to parents after the report was published expressing her pride at the school's result.

Mrs Reynolds said: "I would like to say how proud we feel about the way our children are described throughout the report.

"It describes pupils’ behaviour as ‘outstanding’ and ‘exemplary’ but most importantly, it describes them as ‘confident, happy and self-assured’ and that ‘they show great respect for, and interest in, the ideas of others’.

"As the adults in their lives, we can all feel incredibly proud when we read that our children have ‘the highest respect for equality and diversity’ which they speak about ‘with conviction’.

"This is because of the way we work together and the way in which we promote personal development and the school’s core values of respect, happiness, friendship, honesty and learning."

The report mentioned the school's 'rainbow award' for LGBT awareness for which pupils have created a range of projects like a display board of LGBT values.
