ARE you tough enough to take on Whitefield's hottest challenge?

A group of friends are looking for 100 brave volunteers to face their fears and take part in a charity firewalk.

The challenge is a mental test and those taking it on will have to put mind over matter as they put one foot in front of another.

Adam Green, aged 46, is one of five friends calling themselves the Whitefield Wanderers, he said: "This whole thing about walking over hot coals is seen internationally as a type of empowerment and about putting your fears in a box."

The Wanderers, who train at Total Fitness in Elms Street, are running the London Marathon in April for mind, the mental health charity.

Mr Green said: "We got our heads together and wanted to do this for a charity that we felt reflected all our interests, we’re different ages, different genders, backgrounds.

"Everybody bar none have had some episodes of mental health difficulties or knows people close to them who have suffered. Mental health problems are so widespread."

As well as creating a Virgin Giving page for sponsorships the group wanted to get others involved as well, so those taking part in the firewalk are asked to raise £100 in sponsorship money.

The event is being managed by Scott Bell, two-time Guinness World Record holder for the greatest fire-walking distance (2007 and 2009).

He runs UK Firewalk and will be making sure all participants cross the coals safely.

Mr Green, said: "We hope that a large number of our community will get behind this event which is pain free and very satisfying.

"We are doing it with Scott Bell and he does it all over the UK. He will give a pep talk and there is a little bit of a secret. It’s not as risky as it sounds but you don’t want to stop or take selfies or stick your hands in. You have to be mature about it."

There is a £15 registration fee to enter and the event is for over 18s only.

It will take place on Sunday, March 18 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm in the car park of Total Fitness, Whitefield. Full training will be provided to participants on the day.
