WHAT a fabulous 40th! That was the overwhelming verdict from around 700 visitors who attended a birthday bash at Greenhill Primary in Bury to celebrate the past four decades of the Mile Lane school.

Ex-pupils were able to turn back the clock and rekindle old memories of their schooldays as Greenhill opened its doors to the public for four hours at last Friday’s 40th anniversary party.

Guests included the school’s first headteacher, Mr Cyril Bell, other former staff and scores of adults who were educated at Greenhill.

There were guided tours of the building and displays of school-related material and memorabilia.

A popular attraction was all the school’s original admission log books detailing the full list of pupils since 1968.

Current headmaster Mr Martyn Pilling said: “The whole event was just brilliant and I think we had around 700 people visit us.

"We had a disco in the hall and we hired a marquee which was the focal point for the afternoon. We had a memories book which people signed and we had a lot of lovely comments. Outside, we had stalls and small games plus the final of our ‘Greenhill’s Got Talent’ competition which involved eight acts.

And all our 240 pupils were presented with special 40th anniversary mugs plus a memory brochure we had put together.”

Mr Pilling, who has been at Greenhill for 20 years, added: “The people and the sponsors made the day very special and I’d liked to thank everyone who supported us.
