EMMANUEL Holcombe Church of England Primary has been given a glowing report by education watchdogs.

The school on Helmshore Road was visited in early October and Ofsted inspectors found the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils to be excellent. According to the report, a strong Christian ethos ensures all members of the school community feel valued and special while a high quality of teaching engages and inspires pupils to be reflective and thoughtful. The school is regarded as outstanding in meeting the requirements of all learners and, as a result, pupils ‘thrive in the nuturing and caring environment taking responsibility for both themselves and others’.

Inspectors described the behaviour and personal development of the children as ‘excellent’ and said they are keen to contribute to school, church and local events.

Some pupils, however, show ‘inconsistent’ progress in writing and mathematics and should be given greater challenges to improve in the future.

The impact of collective worship is also described as ‘outstanding’ and the report highlights the commitment of staff and governors to build links with parents and the church.

It states: “All stakeholders in the school feel that it is at the very heart of the community it serves. This is clearly demonstrated in the way both the school and the church reach out to include the community in parish events and Christian festivals.”

Religious education is fundamental at the school and Key Stage 2 pupils have a good understanding of other religions, which develops strong community cohesion.

Despite being smaller than most schools, Emmanuel Holcombe overcomes space limitations through effective organisation and pupil management.

Headteacher Mr Tim Power has received praise for his leadership skills and support of the school’s Christian character.

Mr Power said: “It’s a really good report and a true reflection of the school. I’m especially pleased that the personal development and well-being of our pupils is regarded as outstanding. I’m very proud of everyone; the staff and the governors and, more importantly, the children.”
