BURY Grammar School is celebrating a successful year with 11 students offered places at the country's top two universities.

Four students from Bury Grammar School Girls have received conditional offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities, with similar offers given to seven students at Bury Grammar School Boys.

It is the largest number of offers given to pupils at the schools for several years.

The students looking forward to studying at Oxford are school captain Scott Mody (18), last year's head girl Michaela Don (19), Susan Taylor (18), and Jessica Shepherd (18).

On their way to Cambridge are Richard Barker (18), Christopher Bryant (17), Richard Chew (17), Shantanu Kafle (17), twins Christopher and Richard Stanton (17), and Uzma Ahmed (17).

The teenagers will study a range of different degree subjects, including natural science, mathematics, classics, law, chemistry, and philosophy.

The Reverend Steven Harvey, headteacher at Bury Grammar School for Boys, said: "We are delighted with these offers and warmly congratulate the boys on their achievements. They worked very hard to prepare for their Oxbridge interviews. The boys set themselves high targets and we wish them well as they work to achieve these targets in their A-level examinations later this year."

Mrs Bobby Georghiou, headteacher of Bury Grammar School for Girls, said: "All four students richly deserve their places. It is not just that they are dedicated academics; they are also very well rounded people who will always make the most of opportunities they are given. They take with them our very best wishes for the future."
