A GOOD school with some outstanding features — that’s Greenhill Primary in Bury.
Education watchdog Ofsted was full of praise for the Mile Lane school, noting that there are not enough places to meet demand.
“Parents say this is a very caring and nurturing school,” said the inspectors, where pupils have a meaningful say in how it is run.
Behaviour is outstanding, as is attendance, because pupils really want to go to school.
Pupils support each other exceptionally well, with older children helping the younger ones in reading and play.
Children make good progress in learning as they move through the school and by Year 6 they score well above average standards in English, maths and science.
Teaching is consistently good, characterised by high expectations. Lessons are lively and relevant, and pupils are consequently enthusiastic about their learning. They have an outstanding understanding of cultural diversity, learning French and supporting a child in Zimbabwe, and their spiritual and moral development is also outstanding. On top of that, pupils are encouraged to live healthier lifestyles and take exercise.
Leadership is good, matching teachers’ skills and expertise to best meet pupils’ needs, which has accelerated their learning.
The foundation stage was rated ‘good’: children’s skills are broadly typical for their age when they joined and, thanks to quality teaching, standards are above expected by the time they leave. The youngsters are ‘exceptionally well cared for’ and many outdoor activities complement their learning.
Ofsted made one recommendation: that the school should raise achievement in maths, particularly for the more able pupils.
