PRESTWICH student Catherine Rawsthorne has been nominated for an award for her work at the UK Youth Parliament over the last year.

The awards, sponsored by environmental engineering company MWH, were scheduled to take place last night at the House of Commons.

The accolades are designed to recognise the outstanding achievements of Youth Parliamentarians in various fields.

Catherine, aged 17, of Glebelands Road, who studies at Holy Cross College, has been nominated for her dedication to environmental campaigning.

Andy Hamflett, chief executive of the UK Youth Parliament, said: “At a time when young people are subject to unprecedented levels of negative coverage, it is an honour to be able to celebrate the talents and achievements of those who work so incredibly hard for their communities through their work at the UK Youth Parliament.

“Catherine is an outstanding example of a young person working tirelessly to make life better for other young people in the UK today.”

Last September, 11 Bury candidates contested the United Kingdom Youth Parliament election and Catherine was elected for the second year running.

l Youngsters aged 11 to 18 with political ambitions can find out all about standing as a Youth MP on Saturday.

Voting at the Youth elections and how to join local democracy groups will be other issues that can be discussed at a special Election Information Day to be held between 11am and 3pm in the Elizabethan Suite at Bury Town Hall.

The event will allow young people to find out more about UKYP — the national organisation which represents Youth MPs and campaigns on issues to make a positive change for young people in society.
