SHAKERS captain Paul Scott is determined to make relegation fights a thing of the past for Gigg Lane supporters.
Bury have been flirting in the danger zone for the majority of Scott’s four seasons at the club, but new manager Alan Knill has instilled a fresh confidence in the team since coming to the club in February – and Scott is determined to capitalise on that.
“I would like to think relegation scraps are a thing of the past,” said the 28-year-old. “All the lads are aiming for the play-offs this season – and there is no reason why we can’t achieve it.
“I can feel the expectation around the club after the way we finished last season, and we have picked up where we left off in pre-season.
“Training is sharp and the results have been good. If we can get off to a good start on the opening day, coupled with the momentum from last season, we could go on a good run.
“We have brought in new players with different qualities. Stephen Dawson had a good season at Mansfield last year, and we know that Sodje is a good player. Wayne Brown played well against us for Hereford last season and kept a clean sheet in both games so hopefully he can carry on that form.”
The Wakefield-born ace has spent much of pre-season playing at right-back, but he admits he prefers to play in midfield.
“I will play wherever the gaffer tells me to play if it helps the team,” said Scott. “But I’d rather play in midfield because I think that is my best position.”
Scott, who is expected to be named captain for the season, added: “It was a big honour when I was made captain last season and I really enjoyed it. It brought the best out in me.
“I hope we can carry on where we left off last season and get a winning start on the first day of the season against Brentford.”
