SHAKERS legend Chris Lucketti believes Bury supporters have plenty to be positive about heading into the new season.
Lucketti, who captained Bury during their golden period in the nineties when they reached the second tier of English football, was impressed with the way his former side acquitted themselves against his Huddersfield team in Saturday’s pre-season friendly between the two sides.
Bury looked like springing a surprise result on the League One Terriers when trialist Phil Marsh scored his third goal in three games, but Danny Codman earned the visitors a share of the spoils with an 81st minute equaliser.
“I don’t see why Bury can’t go on and have a good season,” said Lucketti.
“I thought they played very well against us and were the better team. They gave us a bit of a runaround and looked a good outfit with some good players.
“They looked well organised and gave us a real game. They finished off last season quite brightly and I think, if they get off to a good start and keep their main players fit, they have a great chance of doing well.”
Lucketti, who has been reunited with former Bury boss Stan Ternent at the Galpharm Stadium, admitted he enjoyed every minute of being back at Gigg Lane and rates his time at the club as some of the best moments of his career.
“It’s always great to come back here because I have some fantastic memories of the place and there are some great people here.
“We got to Wembley, had two promotions on the spin, sent Manchester City down and I won Player of the Season three years on the bounce – and that is probably as good as it gets.
“It would be difficult for the club to do that again because of the financial side of things.
“When I was here they didn’t have a lot, but they did have a little bit to spend. Who knows, if they get the right players in and develop them you never know what can happen.”
Lucketti also reserved some special praise for Shakers goal machine Andy Bishop, who has scored 34 league goals for Bury in the last two seasons.
“I saw Andy a few times last season and he always impressed me,” said the 36-year-old central defender. “Andy has an eye for goal and he’s certainly banging the goals in regularly. I don’t see any reason why he can’t carry on scoring lots of goals.”
