Bury bow to Paterson brace

Bury 0, Burnley 2

BATTLING Bury were beaten but, by no means embarrassed in an enthralling Carling Cup first round tie against Lancashire rivals Burnley at Gigg Lane.

Martin Paterson, with a brace, settled the contest, but Bury had chances to spring an upset and can take solace from the fact they more than held their own against a team two divisions higher in the football pyramid.

Paterson opened the scoring in the 40th minute when he turned the ball home after Christian Kalvenes' deep cross from the left had caught out a static Shakers defence.

It was rough on Bury, who, minutes earlier, had seen Elliott Bennett have a shot tipped over the bar. Stephen Dawson also had an effort saved by Burnley keeper Brian Jensen in a first-half that saw good opportunities for both sides.

Paterson had given notice of what was to come when he rattled the bar with a cross-cum-shot from the right, while Chris Eagles, the former Manchester United midfielder, should have done better when Paterson squared to him eight yards in front of goal.

If the first-half was even, the second belonged to Bury.

Dawson, who looks an impressive acquisition in the Shakers midfield, shot wide within minutes of the restart, while Bennett also squandered a good chance.

Bury were all over their visitors, but they might have had an inkling it wasn't going to be their night when Jensen made a stunning double save at the feet of Hurst and Bennett after Michael Jones had caused havoc with a cross from the right.

Alan Knill introduced new signing Andy Morrell as he searched for an equaliser, and the Shakers had a couple of decent penalty appeals turned down.

Burnley were limited to sporadic chances on the break, and Eagles fired narrowly over from 25 yards after he found space in front of the Shakers defence.

Stephen Caldwell narrowly failed to connect with Alan Mahon's free-kick when it needed just the slightest of touches, before Paterson sealed Burnley's passage at the death.

With Bury committing men forward, Paterson had the simplest job of tapping home once again after Eagles had seen his effort saved by Wayne Brown.

Bury will look to bounce back from defeat when they travel to Chesterfield on Saturday.
