Three cheers for confident Morrell

ANDY Morrell believes Bury have a trio of strikers to worry League Two defences the length and breadth of the land.

The 33-year-old striker scored on his full debut at Chesterfield on Saturday, and struck up a good understanding with strike partner, Glynn Hurst.

Throw goal-machine Andy Bishop into the mix, and it is clear to see why Shakers supporters are licking their lips in anticipation of a goal-laden season.

And Morrell reckons the supporters have every reason to be cheerful.

“Bish has had a fair few headlines in the past and to score over 20 goals in two seasons is a great effort,” said the Shakers new boy. “He’s a good goalscorer, and then there is Hursty, who worked his socks off against Chesterfield. That rubs off on you and you work just as hard to help him out.

“I understand that there is a bit of pressure on, but we have good strikers at this club.

“We have got a good little squad and if we keep everyone injury-free there is no reason why we can’t do well this season.

“Hopefully the three of us can score enough goals to keep us up there in the table.”

Morrell is delighted to get his Bury career off to a flying start, and he is determined to prove age is just a number. The evergreen striker is upset that, because of his age, his former club Blackpool offered him a less impressive contract than he thought he was worth.

“We have to look after ourselves more now and I think we do that better than the young lads at some points,” he added.

“I wasn’t happy with the way they dealt with me, I thought I deserved a little bit more respect from the people there and I was disappointed to leave, but it’s a new chapter for me now and I’m looking forward to doing well for Bury.

“We’ve had a good start with two good wins so there’s a lot to look forward to.

“I hope I have repaid the manager a little bit with my goal at Chesterfield and, hopefully, there is a lot more to come.”
