Whaere have all the fans gone?

BOXING coach Mick Jelley has voiced his regret that more spectators do not attend the venues where his young fighters ply their talents.

The Bury ABC chief says that often the only people watching amateur bouts involving his youngsters are parents or friends of the various competitors.

“I don’t think we’re selling the sport like we should,” he said. “I know there are boxing fans out there, but we should be coming to the media and encouraging them to highlight when events like the junior ABA championships are taking place.

“We’re not selling it. The only people who come are the mates or the parents of the lads who are boxing.

“There used to be more punters coming through the door. The problem is that these events take place on a Saturday or a Sunday afternoon when there are a lot of other competing events. I also think they are over charging people at the door.”
