Coach Robert Kiss, a former Hungarian Olympian, moved the Salle Kiss Fencing Club to Bury Grammar School in January 2012 and now up to 60 local youngsters a week are participating in the sport locally.

Leading the way for the youngsters is the coach’s own son, Daniel Kiss, aged 14, who represents England in the individual and team event in the foil in an international event in Paris at the weekend.

From there he progresses to the under-17s European Fencing Championships before advancing to Croatia for the world championships.

The youngster, also a pupil at Bury Grammar School, is also a past British champion at u12s and current u14s title holder.

He is currently the number one ranked fencer (foil) at u15s level and third in the u17s.

His mother, Natalia Gyuricska, also a fencing coach, hailed the support of Bury Grammar and local family business, Stormguard and Spiral Colour printing company, for helping to make the fencing club a success.

“We are trying to raise the profile of the sport locally,” she said. “The club is going from strength to strength, thanks to the support of the school and our sponsors.”
