HOCKEY: Blackburn 3 Bury 2

BURY succumbed to only their second defeat of the season as second-placed Blackburn drew level at the top of the North West Hockey League Division Five North.

The home side raced into a two-goal lead after 10 minutes, but Bury hit back before the interval when Luke Fidler grabbed his 30th goal of the season from a short corner.

Bury continued to press in the second half, pushing Blackburn back and got their just reward when Simon Major levelled with an impressive near-post finish.

The local men pushed on in search of all three points, but the tide turned against them when James Larmett and Fidler were sin-binned for minor offences.

Bury’s nine men held firm until their return and both sides continued to push for a winner.

An unfortunate defensive lapse allowed Blackburn to capitalise with a strike four minutes from time.

The Castlebrook High School-based Bury team remain top on goal difference, and will next play third-placed Keswick – who Bury entertain in a mouthwatering encounter on Saturday.
