ABC boys are in the winning groove

NINETEEN-year-old Bury ABC fighter Ali Zahid has been crowned England and Wales Universities champion after a stunning win at the Ponds Forge international sports arena in Sheffield.

Fighting in the 67 to 71kilos division, Zahid stopped his opponent, Nathan Whitehead, of Leeds Univeristy, in the first round. His success followed hard on the heels of more medals for Mick Jelley’s youngsters at the ABA Senior Championships in Gorton, where Brian Rennie, aged 29, won on a split decision against Kile Lamontey, of Astley VIP gym.

The following day, he went on to beat Dale Coyne, of Ancoats ABC, with another split decision to qualify for the semi-final at the same venue tomorrow.

Louis Allison is also through to the semi-finals after his opponent pulled out. Meanwhile, 16-year-old Mohammed Ali, fighting at 52k, beat Jamie Minchell on a unanimous points decision at Thornaby Pavilion, Stockton-on-Tees.
