CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Comets kids show plenty of spirit in Individuals
BURY Comets’ trio of Thomas Whitwam and Adam and Laura Watson did the club and themselves proud at the British Individual weekend in the Midlands.
Each had to endure a series of elimination heats then a 20- race semi-final with the top eight from each of the two semis going into the final showdown.
Whitwam was among the favourites for the podium after making the made the trip to Bretford near Coventry for the under-10s final but ended up being the victim of a bizarre refereeing decision, which allowed Exeter rider Ben Stanbury to overtake on the inside grass area to finish joint third. Adam Watson, meanwhile ,comfortably qualified for the final 16 at Leicester and ultimately finished in fourth place. Laura Watson raced in fron of a large crowd at the Coventry track and got off to a fine start, winning her first race and finishing second next time out. But a bump in her third race saw Laura finish third.
Up against two of the favorites next time out, Lauren Davies raced away from Danielle Riley with Laura chasing for all four laps. Last year’s winner Lauren Jacobs held the line and kept Laura in second place as she finished with an excellent 14 points and fifth place. It was a great result for Laura and it bodes well for next year when weekend moves to the north. Scores: Lauren Davies Leicester 20 Danielle Riley 18 Lauren Jacobs 16; Laura Watson Bury 14.
