TOTTINGTON’S Charlotte Marshall has become the Wales national swimming champion in the 50-metre butterfly in the age group for 13-year-olds.

The Bury Grammar School for Girls pupil began competitive swimming at the age of nine for Ramsbottom Rascals – still her primary club – although she also trains and competes at the City of Salford Swim Club.

It was for the Ramsbottom club, however, that she competed in the British Gas Swim Wales summer national championships at the Wales National Pool in Swansea.

The competition attracted more than 1,000 swimmers from all over the UK aged between 10 and 18, with most swimmers competing in multiple events.

As well as winning gold in the butterfly, Charlotte also claimed silver in the 50m and 100m backstroke.

Her times in the 50m backstroke of 32.69secs and 50m butterfly of 30.98secs saw her ranked as the ninth and 12th fastest, respectively, in the events for girls of her age in British swimming.
