GOLF: Seniors in top-half finish
Bury Seniors completed their Lancashire Red Rose League fixtures on a high to secure their highest finishing position for years. Bury’s success was due in no small part to their impressive home form which saw them inflict defeats on all four teams above them in the table.
Stan Horne’s men went into the final fortnight of the campaign needing to squeeze in one friendly match, three league games and their annual open pairs competition but, as ever, they were up to the task.
First up was a visit to South Manchester to take on Didsbury in an annual challenge match. Once again, the game was played in an excellent spirit with Bury taking the match by eight points to six.
It was then on to Heysham who boasted only one home defeat all season. The home side once again stepped up to the plate to record a comfortable victory with Bury heading home with only four points out of the 14 at stake.
Next up was the final away game of the season at Knott End, always a favourite course for the visitors. Predictably, following the pattern of most of Bury’s matches this season, games were in the balance right up to the final four ball with the final result a sportingly contested 7-7 draw.
The competitive season fittingly ended on the magnificent Unsworth Hall track with Bury hosting West Lancashire side – Hurlston Hall. The home side were eager to avenge their worst defeat of the season and this they did in fine style, edging a nip-and-tuck encounter with an 8-6 victory to secure a top half position.
