CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Young Thomas is invincible
BURY’S rising under-10s star Thomas Whitwam emerged the winner in his showdown with arch rival and home favourite Matt Snell in the first of the Manchester League Individual finals at Astley andTyldesley’s Gin Pit venue.
Whitwam was unbeaten in the qualifying rounds before his clash with Snell in which he got off to a fine start before holding on for an important victory.
Whitwam’s next target was to overcome fellow-unbeaten rider James Barry of Stockport.
Whitwam led into the first bend and, despite a fine effort from Barry, he pulled away to finish undefeated.
The u16s final also looked likely to provide some silverware with James Taylor, Adam Watson and Danny Taylor all lining up for Bury.
Elston was beaten into second place by Stockport’s Connor Simpson after slipping his pedals before home rider Reece Pollitt beat Taylor.
Watson scored a fine win in his first race after all riders had completed two of their four races but when the points were added up Reece and Simpson finished first and second with the Bury trio tied in third place.
In round seven of the Eurovets, John Whiting took second place after leader Mick Aris led for three-and-a-half laps.
When Aris’s pedal arm fell off, all three opponents showed their sportsmanship by allowing him to win.
