Fit-again Soares admits injury mistake
TOM Soares bagged his second goal of the season for Bury at Fleetwood Town on Saturday after returning from a five-match lay-off, but admits he should have been back sooner.
The 27-year-old vice captain had been missing since straining his thigh muscle during the 3-0 victory at home to Accrington last month, but says he made the injury worse by trying to rush back.
“I tore my quad and tried geting back a little sooner than I probably should have done,” said the former Crystal Palace midfielder, who admits he can be is his own worst enemy when it comes to injuries.
“It is important, obviously, to wait and do the right things, but if the manager says ‘are you fit’ I probably say ‘yes’ just to get out there playing.
“As a player you have got to be sensible at times. If you know you are not fit, you need to say ‘I need a little bit longer’, but I’m not brilliant like that.
“It’s not good, but I just want to be out there playing, even if I am not 100 per cent.”
Soares was replaced midway through the second half, but has been declared fit for this weekend’s visit of Southend, much to his relief.
“I hate sitting in the stands. Even just the build-up through the week, the boys will be out training or whatever, and just sitting there watching them is not a good feeling.
“I like to go to the games, obviously, and support the boys, but I don’t take not playing very well.”
