TRIATHLONG: Bryn's big battle to get to Hawaii
TEENAGE triathlete Bryn Davies is in a race against time to raise enough cash to enter the XTERRA World Championships in Hawaii.
The 17-year-old Bury College student has just qualified for the world’s premier off-road multi-sport event with a stunning win in the XTERRA England event in the 16-19 age category in Surrey.
He beat many professional triathletes in the competition which included a 1500-metre open-water swim, a 30-kilometre mountain bike ride and a 10k fell run which, because of Surrey’s flat terrain, included many man-made obstacles.
That success followed other wins this year, including the Boundary Breeze Triathlon at Holmes Chapel, Cheshire – where he was 11th overall – the Bolesworth Duathlon at Hales Superbole Mountain Boarding Centre, Cheshire, and the St Annes Tri Junior Series, where he was 13th overall.
Bryn and his parents Colin and Choi are doubtful about their ability to raise enough cash to enter the Hawaii world championships in time for Monday’s deadline.
“At present, the age group winners have no share of the prize money, leaving Bryn’s opportunity to proudly represent his country looking unlikely,” said Colin. “While other pro athletes take a generous share from the prize purse, Bryn has had a major task to raise enough money to get him to Hawaii.
“The entry fee alone is £320 and then there is the cost of a return flight ticket with additional equipment, transfer fees and accommodation costs.
“The bank of mum and dad simply can’t find this kind of money in such a short period of time.”
Meanwhile, Bryn has been working extra hours at the Village Hotel, Bury, while his college is considering making a small contribution, but this is yet to be confirmed.
Leisure Lakes Bike shop in Bury confirmed at the weekend they would lend Bryn a 29-inch wheel mountain bike should he make it to Hawaii.
