HOCKEY: Southport Threes 1 Bury Ones 7
NEWLY-promoted Bury got their North West Division Four North League off to a perfect start with a dominant away victory. Bury had already missed two golden chances to take the lead before Simon Major fired home a deflected short corner after 16 minutes.
The lead was swiftly doubled by striker James Oakes, whose neat deflection saw Bury go into the interval 2-0 up.
Bury exploded out of the blocks in the second period with two goals in two minutes as first, Luke Fidler and then Oakes, converted excellent passing moves to all-but seal the points. As Southport searched for a consolation goal two more superb, flowing counter attacks were finished by Oakes to take his personal opening- day goal-tally to four.
A debut goal for David Barlass, deflecting in Fidler’s shot, finished the scoring with four minutes of the game remaining. The first team face a tough challenge against Form on Saturday at Castlebrook whilst the third team launch their season at home to Liverpool Northern.
Meanwhile, Bury Twos enjoyed a 4-2 home success against Morecambe Threes in Division Five North thanks to a hat-trick from Tony Sanderson and a debut goal from striker Jamie Barry setting them up for a tough trip to Kirkby Lonsdale at the weekend.
And there was a fine start for the new Bury Hockey Club Ladies in the Hospital Cup. The seconds and thirds took part in a tournament at different venues against the A and B sections of the BSF Ladies Hockey League. The seconds played teams mainly in the A section and came second in the group, conceding only one goal in the last 30 seconds of the game. The thirds fared better by winning their section as newcomers Faye Strong and Heather Jones impressed.
