JUDO: Jona ready to hit the big time
A WALSHAW judo star is set to follow in the footsteps of his famous dad after being crowned a North West champion at the weekend.
Jona Bacon, aged 13, was involved in only his second competition at the St Helens Leisure Centre and walked home with the under-15kg category title.
His dad is none other than judo champion Chris Bacon who competed at the Commonwealth Games in 1990 and also won a number of titles in his native Australia.
Chris was overjoyed about his son’s success and said: “He has only been doing it for five or six months and this was his second event.
“His bout only lasted five seconds which was just like a knockout in boxing.
“He is only a yellow belt so to become the British Judo Association’s NW champions is great.
“We also entered him into the category above where he was up against brown and green belts and won a few of those bouts.
“If he had a bit more confidence then I think he would have done even better.”
Chris also moved into boxing and was a former EBF European Super Cruiserweight Champion to add to his title of being a Commonwealth judo king.
He is hopeful Jona can follow in his footsteps.
He said: “I am not a pushy parent but I think he has the talent and the strength to do well.
“It just depends what he decides when he gets to 16 because some people choose to go into full-time sport and others get into chasing girls.
“I took the sport route but we will have to wait and see.”
