HOCKEY: Bury Ones 2 Formby Threes 2
11:00am Thursday 3rd October 2013 in Sport
BURY’S first team had to be content with a draw following the previous week’s winning start to their North West Division Four North season.
It was a match which the Castlebrook High School- based side paid the price for failing to take their chances.
A dominant first half saw Bury create many opportunities, but Luke Fidler and James Oakes were unable to convert any that fell their way. Bury took the lead, however, four minutes before the interval when a well-worked short corner left Oakes with a simple tap-in. With Johnny Howard a virtual spectator in goal, Bury set out to increase their advantage in the second half.
But a rare Formby break led to a shot which Howard saved. Then a mix-up between the keeper and Ian Hillary led to Bury scoring a comical own goal. Shortly after, Formby took advantage of some ill discipline in the Bury defence to convert a short corner, and take a surprise 2-1 lead. Bury’s play was not at its usual fluent best, with Formby crowding out a wave of attacks with a packed defence.
Bury were able to grab an equaliser when James Dillon bravely slid in at the far post to sweep home a loose ball. But it was definitely two points dropped for the home side, who face the long journey to Keswick next week.
