CYCLE SPEEDWAY: Quadruple success for Whitwam
THOMAS Whitwam scored four excellent wins to seal a place in the A final and consolidated his ranking as under-10s British number two as Bury’s youngsters put in impressive performances in the British Youth and Junior League at Astley.
Adam Turnbull started well in the u12s but a difficult third race put him into the B final where he finished second.
Adam Watson also made the B final, but pulled away to a fine win. Meanwhile, Bury enjoyed a 96-82 win in their North League Division One visit to Sheffield.
The local men were well led by Joe Allan with 16 points with David Renc returning to form with 15. Bury took an early lead and pulled away to a comfortable victory.
Scores: J Allan 16, N Howarth 15, C Parish 13, K Ramsden 13, J Elston 9, D Renc 15, P Dysons 12, C Whalley 4. With the Division One title decided in May, the use of second-team riders damaged the Bury charge to retain the Division Two title.
Ramsden and Elston tired after five previous races on the big Sheffield circuit and put in some tremendous support to Ryan Livesey and Danny Taylor, but Sheffield, who sacrificed the first-team match, took an early lead and ran out comfortable winners, 81-69 installing the Yorkshire club as favourites for the title.
Scorers: Ryan Livesey 16, Kris Ramsden 15, James Elston 10, Danny Taylor 15, Joe Halloran 8, Steve Mann 6.
The Division Three event went to Sheffield, with both teams showing some of the talent coming into the sport. The home side’s win came despite the efforts of Turnbull, Whitwam and Turner.
Scores: A Turnbull 15, T Whitwam 13, L Turner 9, D Millard 8, S Etheridge 6, L Roberts 7.
