BURY Amateur Boxing Club fighters had mixed fortunes last weekend.

Experienced middleweight Bryan Rennie, aged 29, stunned the crowd at the Orford Leisure Centre, Warrington, when he stopped Rhys Yates of the host club, Bridgefoot Police BC, with a second-round knockout.

But 48 hours later, Rennie’s young team-mate, 20-year-old light middleweight Ali Zahid – tipped to go all the way in the British Under-20 bout Championships – crashed out at the semi-final stage at Durham.

Zahid was stopped in the second round after walking onto a bout-clinching punch from Ben Burnham of Birkenhead Venture.

Coach Mick Jelley has two 17-year-olds competing in the National Association of Boys Club finals this weekend.

Muhammad Ali and Hamsa Hussain, both competing in Class B of the championships, will box at 52kilos and 66kilos, respectively.
