Students at Holy Cross College in Bury enjoyed a memorable 2013 with successes in handball, street dancing, cross-country, karate and kick boxing.

The cross country team reigned supreme at the BCS North West Cross Country event at Witton Park. The boys’ team covered a distance of 4.8 miles, the girls 3.2 miles and braved gruelling weather conditions.

Three of the girls – Megan Davies, Christie Cook and Sinead Bent – qualified for the British Colleges Sport (BCS) National Finals, which were held at Bath University. Thirty-six runners took part in the event, with Megan winning the race for the second consecutive year. She crossed the finish line in 22 minutes, 55 seconds – more than a minute in front of the next competitor. Christie took fourth place, clocking 25 minutes and Sinead finished in eighth place with a time of 26 minutes, 37 seconds.

Jennifer Seymour and Anna Spencer were selected for the u18s Great Britain Handball Squad.

Jenny, who took up the sport a year ago, and Anna, who started playing two years ago, both play for club side North East Manchester Hawks.

The duo were initially selected for England under-16s and travelled to Sweden for the Partille Cup in early July, where Anna captained the team. Both girls were also selected for England u18s and travelled to Denmark to complete in the European Youth Cup.

Further success was to follow with the duo being selected for the Great Britain u18s squad.
