Refereeing display 'cheated' Bury fans at Chesterfield

BURY fans were “cheated” of a chance to see a competitive match at Chesterfield, according to manager David Flitcroft, who slammed referee Tony Harrington’s performance following his side’s crushing defeat.

The Shakers boss conceded Paul Cook’s promotion chasers were the better side, but believes the scoreline would have been much closer but for a couple of questionable decisions from the Cleveland match official.

“Their forward play was breathtaking at times and I’m in admiration at the way they beat us, but not in admiration of the refereeing team,” he said.

“We’ve been fairly beaten, but it was not a 4-0, and that’s what I’m disappointed about.”

Bury were only trailing by a single goal when playmaker Danny Mayor was shown a straight red card for a studs-up challenge on Matt Brown in first-half stoppage time.

The 23-year-old midfielder immediately raised his hand in apology after leaving his foot in, but there was no force or momentum in his challenge and the big centre-back’s dramatic reaction did not exactly help his cause.

“It’s always the calculated referees that get more decisions right than wrong, but he sprinted over, gave the decision and didn’t give himself any thinking time whatsoever,” added Flitcroft.

“If he had just waited, assessed it and seen the reaction of the kid tackled, because the 6”5 giant bounced up after Danny got sent off and I don’t buy into that.

“I really wanted to be competitive, and our fans have been cheated of that right.”

The referee was back in the Bury boss’s bad books in the second half after overruling his assistant’s offside flag to award Chesterfield their third goal.

Spireites striker Marc Richards initially peeled away to celebrate heading in at the back post, only to be flagged for offside. But Harrington adjudged substitute Tom Soares to have got the decisive touch.

“It’s a bit of a dodgy rule and I still don’t understand it,” admitted experienced Bury defender Richard Hinds.

“It looks as if Soarsey has headed it, but if he misses the ball the lad’s going to head it in, so what can he do? He can’t do anything. He’s got to go for the ball so, in my view, he (Richards) is interfering with play and should be offside.”

Although i agree after watching this game i was left feeling perplext by some of the less than fair decisions being made against our players this is not unusual.

Teams at the top of the league with an intimidating crowd often affect the decion making of weak minded and below standard officials who have no gumption or sense of fair play.

However having said this i think Dave Got his tactics wrong on Saturday playing 3 along the back against an aggressive side who were on the front foot from minute one.

That might be ok against average teams like Pools and maybe York City to a certain extent but the team will come unstuck against better teams playing this system which makes our defence look vulnerable.

The defence should not be compromised by wanting to have a more attacking formation especially when midfielders don't track back to help their defence as in the case last saturday.

I just hope there isn't a witch hunt going on against our club due to events which transpired during the Kevin Blackwell rein.

Pompey don't seem to be fairing much better than us this season do they?now there's a coincidence.

The referee decided very early on that he was out to be the star man on Saturday, booking two players so early in the game set his standard for the days decision making and he was not very good.Chesterfield were very sharp up front when they beat us in the opener to get beat by them is not the end of the world but we could have done without the scoreline due to the man in the middle being distinctly below average.Lets move on to Burton and three home points.

Will someone please ask some dim folk who follow Bury fc to stop copying my quotes and then making inane references to my productive comments.

I think we can bin your comment Yomin,if you had a pc as slow as mine you would also make spelling mistakes.Try writing on a screen where you can't see the words until after they have been published.

I see our motor mouth chairman will be back on Talk Sport tonight probably making outrageous predictions of how our pathetic football team could still make the playoffs.

Perplext should read perplexed

Eileen,
"I see our motor mouth chairman will be back on Talk Sport tonight probably making outrageous predictions of how our pathetic football team could still make the playoffs".

Why do you constantly belittle and criticize the Chairman and our team?

Ok, so we've had a bad day at the office at Chesterfield, but do we not think the sending off at 1-0 (in the 1st half and away from home) had any reflection on the final score?.....of course it did.
As regards his formation, we'd been 3 or 4 games unbeaten before that game and things were looking alot brighter, why does 1 defeat all of a sudden turn us back into the worst team on the planet?
I pretty much guarantee, you'd have criticized DF if he'd have changed formation to 4-4-2 and we'd have lost 4-0.

Let's forget the Chesterfield result and move on, a win against Burton this weekend will render this defeat as a distant memory.

Onwards and upwards.
UTS!!!!!!!

I find your comments both Sexist and patronising in the extreme not to mention making a sweeping generalisation that all women fit in to one bracket.

I presume you are not married Ex Pat otherwise your better half would be chasing you around your house with a rolling pin."There's a rock with your name on it now kindly crawl back under it before you catch a cold".

Well i thought that men and women were now equal after all that bra buring in the 60;s fronted by Germaine Greer. So how the comment can be sexist

What a typical stereotype male response to my comments. As for the tedium i am accused of dishing out week in week out (i speak the blunt truth but you and some of the other so called supporters don't want to read it never mind digest it).

Go and support your little club, Burton Albion will give the shaker's a football lesson tomorrow only a deluded fan really aspires to the prospect of us retaining our league status.

The highlight of the day will be saying our fond farewells to those true gents who have sadly passed away this week.
