Bury fans took to social media sites to blow off steam after the club's League Two match at Torquay United was called off shortly after midday.

The Devon club, which has now had three consecutive home matches postponed due to waterlogged pitches, invited a local referee to inspect the surface yesterday.

It was decided to delay any decision until after a 9am pitch inspection this morning, but that was also inconclusive.

it was not until after a second inspection at midday that match official Dave Phillips finally decided the surface was unplayable.

A Torquay United spokesman said:"Referee Dave Phillips carried out his first inspection at 9am and then looked again at midday deciding the surface was not safe for the players.

"The ground staff at Plainmoor have worked tirelessly to improve the main problem areas but the pitch was deemed too wet by the officials."

The delay by Phillips left Bury fans fuming, many of whom had made it to Plainmoor before the postponement was confirmed.

Shakers fan Anthony Hoyle summed up the sentiment expressed by many of his fellow supporters on Twitter: "Gutted for the travelling Shakers. Late postponement - what has changed since the first inspection?"

A handful of Bury fans made the trip down to Devon on Friday, and while they were praying for the game to go ahead, overnight rain and continued showers left a certain degree of confusion why it took so long for the referee to make the call.

The Gulls' fans group TorquayFans.com agreed on their site: "Apologies chaps. Ref should have called it at 9am."

Torquay United are expected to make an official statement about refunds once a new date for the match has been set, but it is understood all tickets bought in advance will be refunded for fans unable to make the rearranged fixture.
