BURY may have been frustrated by the weather in recent weeks, but one look at the League Two table and I think there are plenty of reasons to be positive.

After failing to get their last three fixtures on, I think David Flitcroft probably would have expected his side to have fallen into the bottom two.

But it hasn’t worked out like that, and to leave Accrington on Tuesday night with a four-point cushion and a game in hand over second-bottom Torquay is probably the best-case scenario.

I think David has done well to keep the boys ticking over and to earn a point in their first game back at a difficult place like the Store First Stadium was a decent result.

I saw Accrington narrowly defeated by Scunthorpe United last Friday and I thought they looked to be a good outfit, so for Bury to outplay them on their own turf was no mean feat.

Sometimes, after a break from playing games, it is easier to click defensively than in an attacking sense.

That seems to have been the case, with the backline picking up where they left off, but considering the talent of the players in the squad it won’t take long before they are back firing in the goals.

Wimbledon away on Saturday will be another tough test as they are a strong and physical side, but hopefully this little run of not playing games is over now and Bury will start to gather a bit of momentum and move up the table.

I think fans who are unable to travel will get a welcome surprise when they finally return to play a game at the JD Stadium a week on Saturday.

This enforced break may have interrupted the team’s development, but it will have given the new players time to gel and they will be unrecognisable in terms of their style and personnel.

Flickers has had them doing double training sessions and I know they are eager to get out on to the pitch and put what they have learned into practice.

It was certainly nice to hear from the captain, Craig Jones, last week that they have not given up the ghost of the play-offs, so the players must have picked up on their manager’s optimism.

The idea of promotion may sound ridiculous with Bury sitting fourth bottom, but I just think about what happened to Bolton last year.

They were in a similar position but went on a great run and only missed out on a place in the play-offs by a single goal.

That won’t happen again as Bolton are very low on confidence, but I think Bury have the quality in their ranks to do something similar.
