The men’s first team finished off their home campaign with another comprehensive win as they cruised past Ormskirk in North West Men’s Hockey league Division Four North on Saturday.

During an even first half, Bury took the lead through Luke Fidler, following a flowing passing move which started in Bury’s own defensive circle and moved the full length of the pitch.

Whilst Ormskirk looked to press the Bury back line, they rarely made any real head way, with Jonny Howard in the Bury goal having little to do in the opening 35 minutes.

The second half started in similar fashion with Bury taking a 2-0 lead thanks to top scorer James Oakes, before Ormskirk grabbed a lifeline through a cross which deflected in off two Bury defenders, wrong footing Howard at his near post.

Bury instantly restored their three-goal cushion as Oakes finished the move of the match as Fidler’s aerial pass was volleyed first time by Ben Cooper into Oakes’s path. After hitting the post with his first touch, the Bury striker followed up and made no mistake from close range.

Moments later, Oakes had grabbed his 11th hat-trick of the season, taking his personal tally to 45 goals in 21 games, as he finished another good Bury move.

Although Ormskirk went on to convert a short corner to bring the score line to 4-2, it was very much against the run of play, and Bury sealed the result with two more goals.

Firstly, Fidler found the net with a thunderous strike, which left the keeper rooted to the spot, before a right wing cross was turned into his own net by an Ormskirk defender to round off the scoring.

Bury’s final game sees them take on champions Blackburn Northern next Saturday, as they seek to become the first team to take points off the Division Four North winners this season.
