BREIGHMET were thwarted in their attempts to claim the Hambleton Trophy for the Bury and District Golf Association after going down 6-2 at Old Links.

The annual matchplay competition pits together the champions of the Bolton and Bury golf associations.

Michael Tunstall got the first point on the board for the hosts with a 4 & 2 win over Breightmet’s Simon Rigby.

Eddie Stoneley made an immediate fight back for the Bury side, coming from two down in the early stages to salvage a 2 & 1 win against Dave Ahern, thanks in part to four birdies.

Breightmet’s Steven Pickering also showed great spirit to earn a half with Rick Powter, coming back from five down at one stage.

However, Old Links turned up the pressure with three consecutive wins against the Bury contingent.

The final match was extremely tight and inevitably one of the best contests of the day.

Old Links scratch player Matt Buckley managed to hold off Breightmet’s 3-handicapper Billy Holmes for an honourable half.
