JACK McClung’s 87 not out inspired Walshaw to one of the biggest wins of the opening day in the Bolton Association, beating Astley and Tyldesley by 54 runs.

Batting first, McClung and Nick Murphy (41) helped Mikey Watt’s side to 224-8 with Jimmy Cutt 3-79.

Astley and Tyldesley’s only batting highlights were Jarvis Wordsworth (42) and Hamman Patel (34). Liam Riley starred with the ball (3-41).

Defending champions Atherton suffered opening-day heartache in a 37-run defeat against Bury.

Bury opener Mumtaz Mirza hit 51 in their total of 187-8.

Jamar Griffiths harvested the most success with the ball (5-53) and added 39 with the bat but professional Nekoli Parris took 5-50.

Elsewhere, Elton were defeated by six wickets at Edgworth. John Ashworth’s 42 stood out as Elton reached 116-9. However Liam Watkinson’s 36 saw Edgworth win in 24 overs.

In the second week of the Bolton League, Greenmount skipper Andy Kerr hit 71 in their 83-run win at Kearsley. Ata Ur-Rehman, Sabah Ghaus and Joe McCann took three wickets each as Greenmount’s ended on 221-9.

Ur-Rehman took 4-28 and Phil Heaton 3-48 to help Greenmount clear out Kearsley for 138, Peter Malan hitting 28.
