Tennis: Holcombe Brook ladies and men record wins
Updated 4:30pm Thursday 15th May 2014 in Sport
Holcombe Brook ladies’ and men’s teams still have an outside chance of qualifying for the July Bournemouth finals after wins in the Aegon National Team Tennis at the weekend.
Both are attempting to overcome first week losses that were caused by fielding weakened teams.
Because of inclement weather the full-strength ladies team, who played a home match indoors at South Ribble, thrashed Huddersfield 6-0 in a one-sided match. The men, who were inspired by the return of number one Simon Roberts from injury, travelled to Sunderland team, Virgin Active. Roberts, in winning his singles, helped his team to a 3-1 lead and then with partner, captain Andrew Davies who also won his singles, won a tight doubles to secure a 4-2 overall victory.
Both teams face crucial fixtures this weekend. The men take on local rivals Manchester Northern at home and could face former Wimbledon doubles junior champion Liam Broady in their line-up.
The ladies also have a hugely important fixture in their final match away at Holmfirth club, Thongsbridge. With Wrexham having withdrawn the “Brook” have been left only three games to overcome that disastrous start.
