BURY golfer Ciaran Doherty enjoyed double success this week, following up victory in the Wilpshire Trophy by becoming the first winner of the East Lancashire Scratch Challenge Trophy.
The 24-year-old Lancashire player consolidated his lead in the Cleveland Srixon Northern Order of Merit after leading the Wilpshire Trophy from the start, carding a 67 in the first round and 66 in the second to finish on five under par.
He had two shots to spare over county team-mate Joe Brice, from Manchester.
Just a day later, the Sunnybank-based Bury Golf Club member performed well enough in the Antlers Trophy at Pleasington to claim the East Lancashire Scratch Challenge Trophy – awarded to the golfer with the best combined score over the two events.
Doherty, who holds a 190-point lead over Antlers Trophy winner Curtis Clarkin in the merit stakes, said: “I’ve hit a good run of form as I did around about the same time last year. It’s great to win two trophies in successive days.”
