With only one league game remaining, Bury Seniors embarked on a series of five friendly matches before the potential title-deciding derby against Bolton Old Links, with the visit of Accrington to the Unsworth Hall course.

Bury got off to the best possible start with captain Steve Bracegirdle and partner Alan Green defeating visiting skipper Sam Bradbury and Dave Nutter 3&2.

Vice captain John Latham and Jimmy Hardman went one better beating Glyn Robinson and John Osborne 4&3 to give Bury a 4-0 lead.

Gerry Barnes and Mike Howarth kept the pressure on Accrington by taking the 17th hole to secure a 2&1 win over a battling John Kenny and Keith Riding.

Bury were now firmly in command with Stuart Hindley and Ged Eckersley increasing the lead to 8-0 with a comprehensive 6-5 victory over Mick Hurley and Mike Hardman.

However, Accrington were not going down without a fight with George Shirtcliffe and Frank Pilling beating Tony Geldard and Derick Kenyon 2&1. Stuart Burton and Steve Ainsworth defeated Trevor Grimshaw and Glyn Evans by a similar margin to make the match score 8-4 with two to play.

Brian Simper and David Dredge ensured victory for Bury with a comfortable 4&2 win over Ted Hartley and Steve Lawrence before a brilliant performance by Dave Partington and Mike Madden over Kevin Fish and Tony Haslam saw their 8&7 victory taking the final score to 12-4 in Bury’s favour.

Two games in two days took its toll on a much changed Bury squad for their visit to Brookdale with the result a comprehensive 12-4 defeat.

Only Steve Bracegirdle and Ken Pendleton and Stuart Hindley and Gerry Barnes recording victories for the visitors.

This week proves a busy end to the season with away matches at Grange over Sands, the Annual Stand Cup match and the final league fixture against defending champions Bolton Old Links.
