There was some excellent racing in the final round of the Northern Fours and Grand Prix series at Goshen on Sunday.

With a field of 20 riders, the day started with the under-10s event.

Despite Bury’s riders taking only two heat wins between them, the remaining riders packed the middle order scores and enabled the club to take the aggregate win with 77 points.

Two Bury riders took part in the eight-rider under-13s event. Neither Sean Etheridge or Louis Turner could produce a win, but nine points from Turner and eight from Etheridge secured second place for Bury in the group.

The third event of the afternoon was the under-16s and with two Bury riders – Danny Taylor (12 points) and James Elston (11) – in the five-man formulae, Bury won the round with Taylor taking two wins and Elston securing three second places.

The main event of the afternoon was the final round of the Fours event with Bury needing a win against Stockport by a margin of at least 25 points in the 30-heat event.

After the first round of heats, Bury were on 15 points with Stockport on 14.

The Comets upped the tempo in the next series of heats, taking four wins to Stockport’s one and three second place finishes to extend the lead to 31-27.

At the interval, Stockport had clawed another point back and were now just three points behind Bury.

However, an exclusion to Stockport for a starting infringement meant that by heat 18, Bury had increased their lead to 45-39.

The next series of heats saw Bury once again take four wins, and increase their lead to 61-49 but Stockport came back strong in the next four heats taking four wins to Bury’s one.

The final score of 73-65 saw Bury take the match but lose the series by 16 race points.

Bury’s second team in the competition rode well and were in third at the halfway stage, but faded in the second period to take fifth place on the day and fifth overall in the series.

Kristian Ramsden rode well for his 12 points despite a fall, and Joe Holleran and Steve Mann had their best matches to date.

The final event of the long day was the under-19s and Division Two Grand Prix.

Bury had four riders in the eight-man field and were holding the first three places overall in the series.

At the close Holleran, who had been very impressive all day, took the win and with it the Division Two GP title.

John Burston struggled throughout for his nine points to secure second spot in the series. Chas Whalley consolidated third place with Steve Mann in fourth.

The results mean Bury retain the Northern league GP title with 762 points.
